St. John's Community Primary School & Nursery

Year 1 2015-16

Year 1 wb 4th July 2016

Dear all,

This week we will be covering the following:

Maths – we will be revising everything we have learnt over the course of the year and learning to check our answers ourselves.  The importance will be on explaining how we got our answers as well as working them out.

English – we will basing our work on letter writing this week.  We will be focusing on saying what we want to write aloud, checking our work for capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.  Finally, the children will be encouraged to use the connective ‘and’ in their writing and to ask a question.

Topic – On Tuesday afternoon, we will be going for the long awaited local area walk.  We will be looking for physical and man made features.  We will use this information to create a route map on Friday.  Thank you to all those who are able to come on Tuesday afternoon, please can you arrive at school for 1.30 pm.  Thanks.

Well done to Bader for winning at Sports Day.  Congratulations to everybody who made it such a success.  Now that the weather is slightly better (?!) we will take the opportunity to go outside for PE if possible.  Please can you make sure that your child has got either trainers or plimsolls to change into.

Finally, as the weather is beginning to start to look like summer, please can you make sure that your children have a hat every day.  The quad area becomes a real sun trap in the afternoon and for safety reasons, I will not allow children out into the quad without a hat.

Many thanks,

Nicky Austin

Year 1 wb 27th June 2016

Dear all,

This week we will be covering the following:

Maths – we will be revising 2d and 3d shapes – making them and thinking about their properties.

English – we will be looking at the book ‘Dear Greenpeace’ to help us learn about letter writing.

Topic – We will be looking at our local area in more detail.  We will be learning about compass points and on Friday we will be going for a walk around Hoveton.  We won’t be able to do this without adult helpers so if you are around from 1.30 – 2.30, please let us know.  You do have to be DBS checked.

If the weather allows, we will have sports day on Friday afternoon.  It starts at 1pm and you are more than welcome to come and support your child.  Please be aware though that it is still school time so when we get to the running section, please do not come over to your child; take the time to enjoy the experience!  The SJSA will be cooking sausages and burgers and selling drinks as usual (but again, please do not buy anything for your child until the end of the school day).

Finally, as the weather is beginning to start to look like summer, please can you make sure that your children have a hat every day.  The quad area becomes a real sun trap in the afternoon and for safety reasons, I will not allow children out into the quad without a hat.

Mrs Powley is better and she will be back this week.

Many thanks, Nicky Austin

Year 1 wb 13th June 2016

Dear all,

This week we will be covering the following:

Maths – we will be covering fractions (half, quarter and three quarters) and position and direction (turning and position language – above, next to etc).

English – we will be looking at poetry; in particular ‘Daffodils’ by William Wordsworth.  The children will be thinking about how the poem makes them feel and they will be learning the first verse off by heart.

Topic – We are continuing to talk about local famous people.  We will finish our work on Edith Cavell and begin to look at the history of Horatio Nelson.  In computing, we will continue using a wordbank to write recounts.  In RE, we will be learning about the history of Channukah.

The phonics test is this week which means that the children will be taught by Mrs Jellings on Monday and Thursday morning and by Mrs Dazeley on Tuesday and Wednesday morning.  This will allow me to do the phonics assessment on a 1:1 basis.  Results will be given on the last week of term.

If the weather allows, we will have sports day on Thursday afternoon.

Mrs Powley is still unwell so she will not be in all week.

Many thanks,

Nicky Austin

Year 1 wb 6th June 2016

Dear all,

I hope you’ve all had a lovely holiday – I’m looking forward to hearing the children’s news!

This week we will be covering the following:

Maths – we will be revising multiplying and division and using arrays to help us.  By the end of the week, we should also be able to show these operations on a numberline.

English – we will be continuing our recount work using our holidays as a stimulus.  We will be focusing on asking questions to find out information from others and using this to write our recounts.

Topic – We will be to look at important local people so this week we will look at Edith Cavell and what she did.  At the end of the week, the children will be asked to think about if she was a heroine or a traitor and to give their reasons why .  In computing, we will be using a wordbank to write recounts.  In RE, we will be making dreidels so that the children can experience celebrating Jewish style.

Please can you remember that PE is on Monday and Thursday and send in the appropriate kit.  If the weather is good, we may go outside so it would be worth making sure the children have a tracksuit or something warm and outdoor shoes.

The phonics test is next week; the best way of helping your child to prepare is to read with them regularly and encourage them to sound out unfamiliar words.

Mrs Powley is still unwell so she will not be in all week.

Many thanks,

Nicky Austin

Year 1 Week beginning 23.5.2016

Dear all,

This week we will be covering the following:

Maths – adding and subtracting.  We will be looking at problems written as words and how to decide whether to use + or – to solve them.  We will also be practicing solving problems when = is in a different place in the calculation.

English – we are continuing looking at traditional tales and this week the focus is on George and the Dragon.  I know I’ve missed St George’s Day but I thought it was a good way to include British values into the curriculum.  We will be working on retelling the story but mainly on how to re-read to check for any missing full stops or capital letters.

Topic – we are continuing to look at plants in the local environment and this week we will be focusing on leaves and trees; naming them and sketching them.  We are also going to be doing some observational drawings.  In computing, we will be using apps / software to create an algorithm and to debug it.  In RE, we will be looking at how Jewish children celebrate Chanukah.  If you have any old ‘celebration’ cards; birthday, anniversary etc that you would be happy to let us have, then we could certainly use them this Friday.

Many thanks,

Nicky Austin

Year 1 Week beginning 16.5.2016

Dear all,

Here’s the brief guide to what we will be covering this week.

English:

We will be focusing on writing this week by re-writing the story of Rapunzel.  We will be looking at traditional tales characters and their similar characteristics we will also be using descriptive writing to create a ‘wanted’ poster.  Our spelling pattern is adding –ing to words.

Maths:

We will be revising place value and also focusing on time.  It would really help if you could practice days of the week and months of the year with your child.  They do know songs to help them learn these.

Topic:

The children be learning about garden plants this week and the importance of bumble bees.  We will begin making our own factfile about plants.  In computing, we will be practicing the skill of de – bugging.

Other news:

Mrs Dazeley will teach the children as usual all day Wednesday and Thursday and Friday afternoon.

Finally – Year 1 have their phonics assessment coming up soon – during the week of 13th June.  This is a national assessment which takes place in every school in England.

The test itself is very low key – it takes the form of reading words on a 1:1 basis with me and the emphasis is on using phonics to read unfamiliar or familiar words.  I do not tell the children we are doing a test, I just say that we are reading together and I would really appreciate your support with this as I don’t want them to be worried in any way.

I’ve attached some useful materials, including a copy of the words used in the test last year but they are really only for information.

You will be given the results during the last week of term.  If  you have any questions, I’m more than happy to answer them.

Many thanks,

Nicky Austin
